Message from the Principal

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your kind welcome to the Coolbock National School community. I have been very impressed by the friendly and positive atmosphere that exists among the pupils of the school. It is one of the many assets of the school, and along with a very supportive board of management and parents association, Coolbock National School has a bright future ahead.

My vision for the school is to provide a well-ordered, caring, happy and secure learning environment where the intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural needs of our pupils are identified and addressed. I look forward to the years ahead in working with you and the school staff to ensure your child receives the best education possible.

With the launch of our Facebook Page, and along with our existing school website, we hope to keep you updated with all activities in our school. As always, if there is anything you wish to discuss regarding your child’s development here in Coolbock N.S please do not hesitate to get in touch with us. Please don’t think any problem is too small – if you or your child needs support in some way, let me know. Thank you for your continued co-operation.

Daragh McDaid, Principal

Coolbock N.S. Fun Day

We will be hosting a Fun Day in Coolbock National School on Sunday 19th October from 2-4pm. The aim of the day is to celebrate Coolbock National School with a host of activities. We would like to extend a special invitation to past, present and future pupils, parents, grandparents and all members of the Coolbock community. It is a great opportunity for potential new parents to come and see our school and our wonderful facilities. Some of the activities planned include pottery, face painting, bouncy castle, treasure hunt, obstacle course, movie star studio, art exhibition and many more.

Coolbock Radio

We have launched our own radio station. The pupils produce a weekly podcast which is broadcast on our school website and Facebook page every Friday. We bring you a variety of different items each week, from the weekly news to special reports. So far, there have been special reports on the Science of Exercise and Cycling. We also give you an alternative spin on the weekly news, with the ploughing championships, the price of meat, the ice-bucket challenge and animal pantomimes some of the topics featured so far. You can listen to the podcasts on any computer or smart phone anytime after they are uploaded on a Friday.

Roald Dahl Day

We celebrated Roald Dahl Day in the school on Monday 15th September. The pupils dressed up as their favourite Roald Dahl character. We had a treasure hunt around the school in search of some scrumptious treats. The one everyone was trying to find was a Wonka bar with the Golden ticket inside. In the afternoon, we took part in a Live Webcast on Puffin Virtually Live where pupils from all over the world joined in for a special celebration of Roald Dahl and all his marvellous books.

Green Schools workshops

We took part in a Cycle Skills workshop on Wednesday 1st October. The pupils in the senior classes completed the Traffic School foundation level course as part of the Green Schools Travel theme. The pupils learned about bicycle maintenance, road safety, and cycling skills. There were lessons from the Traffic School both in the classroom and on the school playground on bicycles. Thanks to Jarlath Gantly from the Traffic School, and to Imelda Ryan-Jones from the Green Schools Programme for organising the day for us.

On Thursday 2nd October, the whole school took part in an interactive road skills workshop with Imelda-Ryan Jones. Pupils learned about choosing safer places to cross, and the importance of helping the driver to drive without distracting the driver. Pupils were also interested to learn that it is essential to wear reflective gear during the times of Dusk, Darkness and Dawn. The school was featured in this week’s Sligo Champion and on the Sligo Today website for the launch of Irish Road Safety Week.

Jolly Phonics

The Jolly Phonics programme has been introduced in the Junior room. Jolly Phonics is a fun and child-centred approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics in our school. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, the multi-sensory method is very motivating for children. Ms. McDonald has held a meeting for parents in Junior and Senior Infants regarding the programme.

Other activities

Swimming for 2nd – 6th classes has been taking place in Sligo Sports Complex on Fridays for 8 weeks until mid-term. The classes are shared with Taunagh National School. Michael Hurley has resumed tin whistle classes for 1st – 6th class, which take place every Monday for the duration of the school year.

Board of Management

There were board of management meetings held on Wednesday 17th September and Wednesday 8th October.

Parents Association

The Parents Association held a very successful table quiz in Sean McDermotts on Sat 4th October. €970 was raised on the night. The Parents Association will host a retirement function for Suzanne Donnelly on Sat 8th November in the Glasshouse Hotel at 9pm. The Board of Management would like to express a special word of thanks to the Parents Association for all their hard work and support for the school.

School Opening/Closing Times

Classes commence each day at 9:10am. The school officially opens to receive pupils in the school from 9:00am. For insurance reasons, no responsibility can be accepted by the school for pupils arriving before the time of 9:00am. Classes finish each day at 1:50pm for infants, and 2:50pm for 1st – 6th class, and no responsibility can be accepted by the school for pupils after the time of 3:00pm.

Ag Sugradh le Chéile Workshop

The ‘Ag Sugradh Le Chéile’ programme, run by the HSE, was hosted in the school on Wednesday 8th October in the Junior room. It involved parents playing fun games and activities with their children. It was a fun morning which was enjoyed by all, and there were some great ideas for games and activities to play and encouraging children to be active. Check out our website and Facebook page for photos of the workshop, along with many more photos on different activities that have taken place in our school.
